prɪˌɒkjʊˈpeɪʃ(ə)n/
noun
noun: pre-occupation
- the state or condition of being preoccupied or engrossed with something.
If I have a problem to solve then I almost always go for a walk by the lake or in the beech forest - not to look at the scenery but because the quiet (and people less??) backdrop induces an almost meditative state. Gnarly issues gradually become untangled. Solutions present themselves. My shoulders drop, my frown lines relax :) When I walk back into the house or my studio I sometimes have a different solution to try out.
Taking yourself out of a sticky situation for a while can sometimes allow your right brain to think outside the box which your annoying left brain has stuffed you into, and you may just need to head off in another direction to sort out what is bugging you.
This week I am struggling with new chickens who are more than slightly feral, an SPCA rescue cat who is steadfastly ignoring me and other worries about various friends and family....going off for a stroll in the misty rain this morning I managed to sort in my head which problems I can do something about, which ones I can't - which need to be set aside for the moment.
Does this have anything to do with my art practise? Yes - sometimes I turn an idea over in my head for days before I put brush to paper, figuring out what might work and what won't. Sometimes I worry myself too much and realise that I'm thinking too much and just need to pick up a brush and slap some paint on and start!
Take from this what you will , and if you see me wandering along a bush track muttering to myself don't be nervous, I'm probably just deciding which red to use!
Have a nice weekend.
PS. this is where my morning walk often takes me- Black Valley Stream....
